United Airlines Secures $180 Million Contract for Maintenance Work on Military Aircraft
New contract is another endorsement of United's expertise with Pratt & Whitney
PW-2000 and PW-4000 engines
CHICAGO, IL - DECEMBER 12, 2005 - United Airlines today announced that its maintenance division, United Services, recently secured a $180 million contract with Pratt & Whitney (P&W) a United Technologies (NYSE: UTX) company, and a leading aircraft engine manufacturer. Under the contract, more than 200 F117 engines from U.S. Air Force C-17 military aircraft will undergo maintenance over a three-year period.
Since its 1998 inception, the United Services-P&W military partnership has enabled maintenance work on more than 275 F117 engines -- the military version of the commercial PW-2000 engine.
"The trust that the U.S. government, Boeing and Pratt & Whitney have in our engine expertise reinforces our reputation for top-of-the line engine maintenance," said Bill Norman, senior vice president-United Services. "Recent maintenance contracts we have signed with Air China, Air Canada and Korean Air for PW-4000 engine work, plus this F117 win, are a direct result of United's expertise on these P&W engines. To date we have completed more than 515 overhauls on the PW-2000 and PW-4000 series."
"The United Services-Pratt & Whitney partnership is the most cost-effective maintenance solution for our customer, the United States Air Force. We are proud to partner with United Services to continue providing the best value for the F117 powered C-17 fleet of aircrafts," said Warren Boley, Operational Military Engine Programs Vice President, Pratt & Whitney.
Work on the engines will take place at the United Services Maintenance Center in San Francisco and at United's Maintenance Repair Center in Charleston, South Carolina.
